Why we're here
More than 2.5 million Canadians have diabetes. 750,000 don’t realize they have it,
about 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Over 144,000 people in Alberta have
diabetes.
Diabetes facts and figures:
- In 2008 there were 56,841 persons diagnosed with diabetes in the Calgary Health Region
- There are over 800 children in the Calgary region diagnosed with diabetes
- 90% of all people with diabetes have type two diabetes.
- People with Type 1 diabetes have no insulin production so must inject daily.
- People with Type 2 diabetes use oral medication plus diet and exercise management to control their disease.
- Canada’s third largest cause of death by disease.
- Diabetes kills one Canadian every 30 minutes.
- Costs our heath care system more than 13 billion dollars annually.
- The second most common chronic disease in children.
- Complications of diabetes include: blindness, the underlying cause of half of all
heart attacks and strokes, kidney failure and non-
traumatic amputation.
Insulin is not a cure, it's only a control
In the past years, researchers at the Julia McFarlane Diabetes Research Centre have gained worldwide attention with important discoveries that they hope will speed up the cure for diabetes. Since 1994, more than $3.5 million has been raised in Calgary and surrounding areas by the Diabetes Association (Foothills), to go directly to diabetes research.
